I read this in December 2000.

This didn't quite make it for me. Liked the ideas: neanderthals among us, secret encodings in silk, hidden technologies. But I got a bit lost a couple of times, in fact I remember thinking it was a collection of short stories (I almost never read short stories) and it was an effort to finish it.
