I first read this in 1997 and most recently in February 2001

Set in New York in the very near future, Lola's diary traces the decline and fall of herself, her family and the society around her.

This is a powerful but heartbreaking novel. I felt for Lola, her family and friends. Womack does a stunning job smoothly dragging Lola from comfortable middle-class complacency to a very much harder and tougher street-wise morality.

Read this.
